About Kim Rodriguez, LSW
Hi! My name is Kim Rodriguez, and I am a bilingual (Spanish & English speaking) psychotherapist at Anchor Therapy located in downtown Hoboken, New Jersey. I provide in-person and virtual therapy sessions to New Jersey residents. I received my Master of Social Work from Rutgers University. I am a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) with several years of experience working with children (5+ years old), teens, and adults. I draw from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), family systems therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.
Your teen has become withdrawn as they try to juggle academic expectations, identity exploration, social pressure, and more. They're telling you that they're 'fine' to avoid worrying you. But they may be struggling with anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem and not know how to say it. As a therapist who works closely with teens, my goal is to support your teen through this overwhelming time by creating a safe space where they feel heard, seen, and able to actually open up. Together we'll build the tools they need to feel more confident, more grounded, and more like themselves again.
I work with children, teens, and adults through anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, and more. My approach is person-centered and collaborative, and I tailor each session to meet your individual needs. Taking the step to reach out is hard, especially when it's for your child. You don't have to figure this out alone. Together, we'll create a warm, nonjudgmental space where you (or your child) can feel truly supported.
A little about me: In my free time, I enjoy running and spending time with family & friends. I value slowing down and being present through things like sunsets and crocheting, but also find time for video games with friends! And, as a proud Colombian, I will always enjoy a good cup of coffee (Colombian preferred).
More about how I could help…
+ Anxiety Therapy
- I have extensive experience working with various types of anxiety, from generalized to more chronic patterns. Anxiety has a way of pulling us out of the present moment, and it doesn't just live in the mind, it shows up in the body too. Together, we'll use mindfulness to learn grounding techniques that bring you back to the here and now, while CBT helps us identify and challenge the thought patterns fueling your anxiety. Whether I'm working with a child, teen, or adult, the goal is the same: helping you feel more in control of yourself instead of being controlled by anxiety.
+ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- I use CBT with clients of all ages to explore the thought patterns behind challenges like anxiety, OCD, and other problem behaviors. CBT gives us practical, structured tools to break the negative cycles that often keep us stuck. Through strategies like the thought log and thought triangle, we'll work together to notice your current thoughts, understand how they shape what you feel and how you act, and reframe them so you can practice healthier responses in everyday life.
+ Culturally Sensitive
- As a person of color, I'm keenly aware of how deeply cultural background shapes a person's lived experience. In my work, I honor how your unique identity, language, family, and traditions influence how you see the world and move through it. I create space for these parts of you to be heard rather than overlooked, because I believe cultural identity isn't a side note in therapy. It's central to understanding who you are and what you need.
+ LGBTQIA+ POPULATION
- I welcome LGBTQIA+ clients of all ages and provide an affirming space to explore identity, relationships, family dynamics, and the unique stressors that can come up along the way. Whether you're navigating the coming out process, parenting a child who came out, questioning your gender or sexual identity, or facing discrimination or bullying, I'm here to support you. As a bilingual therapist and person of color, I also understand the specific layers that culture, family, and tradition can add to this experience.
- Your identity doesn't have to be the focus of our work for you to feel comfortable here. Sometimes people just want a therapist they feel comfortable being themselves around, which is why I think it's important to express my comfort and knowledge working with this population. I am an ally, use she/her pronouns, and prefer to be called Kim.
+ Life Transitions
- I have extensive experience supporting clients of various ages through life transitions, whether it's a major shift in family dynamics, starting a new career, or moving into a new environment. These moments are hard for most of us, and self-compassion is often the first thing to slip away. In session, we'll work on slowing down and finding ways to be kinder to yourself through the change. We'll also reflect on past transitions you've already moved through, recognize what helped you get to the other side, and lean on those strengths again.
+ School Issues
- School can be one of the biggest sources of stress in a child or teen's life. I have extensive experience helping clients work through bullying, social pressure, academic challenges, and more. The tricky thing about school issues is how connected they are. One challenge often feeds into the next, and stress builds quickly. Together, we focus on building coping skills to manage that stress and improve overall functioning, so your child can feel more confident facing whatever comes up next, both in school and outside of it.
+ Strengths-Based Therapy
- My approach is rooted in strengths-based practice because I genuinely believe every person is capable of change. Resilience is something we all carry, even when it doesn't feel that way. In our work together, I'll always acknowledge the challenges you're facing, but I'll also help you see the strengths and positive qualities you bring with you. Those strengths are what we lean on through the healing process, and recognizing them is often a turning point in itself.
+ TELEHEALTH
- Looking for virtual therapy? I offer telehealth sessions (video and phone) for clients residing in New Jersey. Telehealth can be a great option if you have a sick kid at home, you're sick yourself, you're traveling, you're stuck at work, or you just want to do a session from your couch. I find virtual sessions just as effective as in-person, and the added flexibility makes it easier to stick with consistent therapy.
What the next steps would look like…
The next step, if you feel I could be a good fit to help you or your loved one, would be to reach out to our intake coordinator by filling out the form at the bottom of this page. Our intake coordinator will give you all the information you need to know when setting up an appointment and to make sure you’re a good fit with the therapist you’re requesting. When reaching out, please explain a little bit about yourself (or who you want to bring in for therapy) and what you’re looking for help with. We would then discuss your availability to find a time to schedule your intake session.
You have the option of coming in-person for sessions or doing online therapy (video/phone sessions). I have availability Mondays through Fridays, including evenings. While every person and family are different, I conduct an intake assessment in which we will discuss your struggles, your goals for therapy, and your history. If you are bringing in a child or teen who is under 18 years old then I will need a parent or guardian present to get some background information from you as well. This helps me get a full picture of who you are and how I can best help you or your child. You also may find it helpful to attend the intake session without your child so that you can speak openly about your concerns.
The hardest part of starting therapy is finding a therapist who’s available and a good fit. That’s why I try to explain here how I work with my clients. If this seems like a good fit then feel free to reach out! Our intake coordinator, will get back to every client who reaches out through the form on our website. We reply to everyone who reaches out. If our intake coordinator finds that we are not a good fit for whatever reason, then she will see if there’s another therapist at Anchor Therapy who can help you or she will direct you to another professional in the area who can best help you.
Please feel free to contact our intake coordinator and we can start the process of helping you or your loved one feel better soon.
